Michael W. Conaway

DVM

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Conaway is an experienced equine veterinarian who has been caring for Southern Arizona horses since 1978. He grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona where he began riding, training and showing horses that led him to want to become an equine veterinarian at an early age. Dr. Conaway received both a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Animal Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Science with honors from Washington State University. He stayed at Washington State University to receive his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine with honors in 1978.

After graduating from veterinary school, he returned to Arizona and started Reata Equine with a truck and a dream. With no other veterinarians to share the load, he spent many long days and nights, weekends and holidays, caring for sick horses. Over the last 45 years, Reata has grown from a single person practice to a full-service veterinary hospital.

Dr. Conaway strongly believes in the importance of education. He taught equine veterinary science for many years at Pima Community College, writes health care articles published on the blog here, helped author several scientific papers, served on the steering committee that helped establish the new veterinary college at the University of Arizona, teaches veterinary students from the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, attends veterinary conferences regularly, mentors recent veterinary graduates through Reata’s internship program and gives educational seminars to local horse owners throughout the year. Dr. Conaway’s special interests include equine foot problems, equine reproduction, infertility problems, lameness, and laminitis.
