Dr. James H. Maciulla was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, as part of a large family of human healthcare professionals, making him the first to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. A proud graduate of Salpointe Catholic High School and the University of Arizona. Dr. Maciulla earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 2001. Starting his career in Flagstaff, Arizona, Dr. Maciulla practiced both large and small animal medicine and surgery.
He founded a multi-doctor, mixed-animal practice just four years after finishing veterinary school. His passion for innovation led him to co-found small animal emergency practices across Northern Arizona. Dr. Maciulla also served as the president of the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association and holds veterinary licenses in both Arizona and New Mexico. In 2018, Dr. Maciulla took on the role of founding Associate Dean at the University of Arizona's College of Veterinary Medicine, where he contributed significantly to shaping the future of veterinary education. Never one to stop learning, he completed an Executive MBA in 2021 with Academic Distinction.
Dr. Maciulla’s professional interests include surgery (particularly orthopedics), dentistry, dermatology, and providing high-quality general veterinary care with an emphasis on effective communication. He’s committed to being a steward of the human-animal bond, providing clients and their pets with compassionate and comprehensive care.
Outside of work, Dr. Maciulla is dedicated to his family—his wife, Carrie, whom he married shortly after veterinary school, and their two teenage daughters. He is also a frequent visitor of Home Depot, Lowe’s, O’Reilly Auto, and Ace Hardware as the resident “handyman” for his family’s crib. He lives with a menagerie of animals that bark, lay eggs, sleep under the covers, and eat too much hay!
